Today I am truly grateful for my little niece Lilly. I recently listened to this talk with David Martin where the point he was getting across stated that our culture views the first 13 to 18 years of your life as a cost center – basically we are not getting anything productive out of a child. We have created schools and training to refine them to be productive. They are productive for say 40 - 50 years and adding value to our society. Then there is a day that will come when they are no longer productive and they are considered a cost center again. This sounds bogus but really think about how we view our society and you will understand this.
The value a child provides to us is so important to the essence of who we are. My niece Lilly brings happiness to me just by her smile. Truly being present and in the moment around her you begin to become aware of the simple things in life and how sincerely beautiful they are.
There is a sense of joy in a child and it does not take a lot for them to be in that state. Of course they need their basic needs met; food, sleep and the occasional diaper change. Other than that they just want to be in a state of joy or bliss. You can put a sock on your hand, give is a voice and move it around from side to side and in a matter of seconds you will get a smile out of a child. It is so simple and sometimes we make it so complicated.
Today I am so grateful for all the wonderful things my niece Lilly teaches me, for the time I get to spend with her, for the love she has and the smile she puts on my face.
