Day 21 of Gratefulness: Coffee

Each morning I look forward to that first cup of coffee. Not just for the caffeine that it provides me but also for the delicious taste. I will admit I am a rather picky coffee drinker. I refuse Dunkin Donuts and will not order a regular coffee at Starbucks. I know I was born and raised in New England and was a huge Dunkins fan but not anymore. My coffee palate has changed a lot over the years. I want something that tastes great and prefer organic if I can get it.

How I make it at home has changed as well. I had an awesome coffee pot from Cuisinart for 7 years but eventually it died probably from over use. Now I brew using a French press and the coffee is oh so much better. Now it does not stay warm for as long with the fresh press but the flavor is fuller. The beans are important to me as well. I tend not to grind them myself as the mess they make drives me nuts but I will buy a high quality brand and usually organic. Occasionally I purchase ones with flavor .The Market blend that Allegro makes for the coffee shop The Market in Denver is fantastic for the holidays. It has hints of chocolate, vanilla, hazelnut and cinnamon.

The other important thing to me is what I put in my coffee. I am not a black drinker at all and do not understand those that are. I prefer almond milk and either agave or honey. I want the real honey and not that fake stuff that so many provide. I will not even use honey from Starbucks as I am not sure if it the real stuff- it doesn’t taste like the real stuff. I tend to grab tea now from Starbucks, as the coffee just doesn’t seem to work for me there. I will use soymilk as an alternative but I prefer almond milk or even rice milk.

My favorite Denver coffee spots that are all within walking distance from me are:

  • Fluid Coffee
  • Pablo’s
  • Whole Foods
  • Novo
  • Illegal Grounds
  • City O’ City
  • The Market

Check them out and see what you think
